Traditional or Invisible Braces?

Orthodontic options for straighter teeth at our Croydon dental practice

If you are thinking about wearing dental braces to help you have a straighter and more even and attractive smile,  you might be wondering whether to opt for traditional braces or the new more modern ones you have heard about? It is a question that we come across quite often, and the answer will usually depend on a number of things. Both orthodontic methods will straighten your teeth effectively, but your choice might depend on budget, and preferences among other things.

Traditional Braces Are Tried and Trusted

Metal braces have been around for decades. They have changed a lot since the old days (thankfully), but the basics still remain the same; that is, brackets that are attached to your teeth, connected by a wire which will gradually move everything into alignment and leave you with a straighter and more even smile.

What is good about them?

  • They work well for complex cases. Overbites, underbites, crowded teeth, big gaps… traditional braces can handle it all.
  • You don’t have to worry about taking them out. They are fixed to your teeth, so once they are fitted, they are always working.  You won’t have to remember to do anything.
  • They may be more affordable in some cases. Especially if you are comparing them with the latest and more discreet aligner systems.

What are the drawbacks to traditional braces?

Even though modern brackets and wiring are smaller and sleeker than ever, they are still made from metal, and that is often very visible to those around you. For some people, especially adults, that can feel a little intrusive or awkward, particularly in professional or social settings.

You also need to be very diligent about cleaning around the wires and brackets. Food can easily get trapped, so brushing and flossing take more effort. Sticky or chewy foods are best avoided  altogether to avoid decay and gum disease.

Invisible Braces - The Modern Alternative

Invisible braces, or clear aligners, such as Invisalign, have become increasingly popular in recent years, especially among adults and teens who want to avoid the visual impact of traditional metal braces.

These consist of clear, custom-made trays that fit securely but comfortably over your teeth and will gradually move them into place. You change them yourself, without needing to go to the dentist, every week or so as your teeth start to move towards the desired position.

What is so good about them?

  • These modern orthodontics, made from a medical grade transparent plastic,  are almost invisible to those around you. Most people won’t even realise you are wearing them unless they are very close to you.
  • You can take them out yourself for short periods which we will advise more about at the consultation. That means eating is a lot easier and there is no need to restrict choices, and you can brush and floss normally as well.
  • Comfort. No brackets or wires means less chance of irritation and sore gums.

Appearance versus Function - What Matters Most?

For many patients, the decision comes down to lifestyle and confidence.

If you are self-conscious about the idea of wearing braces, perhaps especially as an adult, then clear aligners are a fantastic option. They let you go about your day without worrying whether your smile is giving away your secret.

But if you are someone who doesn’t mind the look (or even finds it a bit iconic), or if you just want a no-fuss approach, traditional braces could be your perfect match, although it is important that you consider the extra care needed to keep them clean to avoid tooth decay and gum disease.

As far as treatment length goes, both are likely to be similar although modern braces can work slightly quicker in some situations. For some people, cost might be a factor too. Invisible braces can be a little more expensive, but for many, this is a price worth paying for discreetness, especially considering the length of time they may need to be worn for.

During your consultation at the Smile Dental Practice Croydon, we will give you a clear estimate of both cost and duration, so that you can make an informed decision.

Ultimately, both options lead to a straighter, healthier smile, which is the point of wearing them, but the convenience and discretion of invisible braces is certainly leading to an increase in their popularity.

If you are still unsure,  the best way forward is to book an orthodontic consultation with us. We will  examine your teeth, talk you through your goals and concerns, and recommend the method we feel is best for your individual case. You will always have the final say of course.

Choosing braces is a step towards feeling more confident, whether you’re smiling, speaking, or just taking a selfie. Whichever path you choose, we are here to support you the whole way.
